What is Power Animal Retrieval?

What is a power animal?

Most people have at least one spirit helper in animal form. It is possible to have more. As a rule, these helpers are present whether we are consciously aware of them or not. They provide protection, assistance, wisdom, direction and companionship. In the shamanic worldview, an individual’s personal power and physical vitality are gifts from these helpers, hence the term "power animals". These spirits generally take the form of undomesticated animals and like their physical counterparts, they come and go as they please. They will also respond when you call them. The power animal is tuned to you and uses its instincts to sense when you are in danger or need their help and will then come of their own volition.

A particular power animal can come to help you with an issue that is very specific for you. It is important to be flexible and open-minded with the specific animal to allow it to convey the gifts it may be coming to share with you.

Each power animal that you acquire increases your power so that diseaes and negative energies have less chance of upsetting your body's natural balances. The power animal's spirit also lends you the wisdom and attributes of its kind.

How Does the Process Work?

A shaman can assist a client to recover their health, energy or psychic protection by helping them to discover and make a relationship with a power animal. A shaman journeys into the spirit world to discover an animal spirit that will volunteer to be the client’s companion. Prevailing upon the animal’s compassion, the shaman asks it to come to its human friend. If the animal agrees, the shaman escorts it back to the client. After such a retrieval the client may experience a resurgence of power, health and balance in their life.

For generations, power animals have been an integral element of shamanism. One of the basic tenets of the system states that everything is alive and carries a distinct amount of wisdom and power within it. The animals are considered to help heal those who seek their companionship.

Shamanism teaches that power animals select the recipient, meaning you can’t pick a certain animal simply because you like it. Power animals are not always actual species, some mythical creatures can serve as well.

Any animal may be considered a power animal, whether wild or domestic, incarnated in a physical body or in spirit form. They each have their own personalities and strengths. There is no set rule or formula for which an animal may show up or how many may come to be with the recipient.

Acquiring Your Power Animal

Each shaman has their own style for helping procure power animals. At Sellwood Healing, the procedure for obtaining power animals follows this general guideline:

Five animals are chosen to start, although more may come in with subsequent sessions. They are the primary spirit guardians and assume a place at the cardinal directions of East, South, West and North with the client in the center. Each direction has a specific energy and attribute to manintain a balance with and define the roles of the animals chosen. One helper (usually a bird) watches over and protects the client from above.

After receiving the connection of one or more power animals, the recipient can communicate with the animals during meditation where they invite the animal(s) to form a relationship.

A particular power animal can come to help you with an issue that is very specific for you. It is important to be flexible and open-minded with the specific animal to allow it to convey the gifts it may be coming to share with you.

It is by honoring the power animal that we make a deeper connection with it. In the shamanic world, power animals lend their power and they are deeply regarded for this. It is traditional to thank the power animal before and after the session. By honoring the power animal the recipient lets it know that its assistance is appreciated. Honoring it can be as simple a saying a thank you in your heart, or getting an object which represents it and putting it in a place that is special to you.
